The state library is a modern centre of information for and about the state and its people.

Operating as the centre of information for the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, we are legally obligated to collect, catalogue and safe keep literature published not only in the state but also literature that thematises the state. We act as a legal deposit library for Mecklenburg-Vorpommern which involves cataloguing all literature on the subject of regional studies.

Furthermore, as a regional and scientific universal library we simultaneously provide support for the government. With a total collection of 805,000 pieces of media, we provide recent subject literature, scientific information, databases and over 2,400 newspapers and magazines relating to areas in economy, administration, culture and education of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

Our dedication for the completion, care and long-term safekeeping of valuable historic stock is contributing to the remembrance of this state. Our special collection Mecklenburgica and the extraordinary sheet music collection, alongside historic prints, scripts and estate papers, are of particular interest to our users. Hence, actively working towards the digitalisation of the old portfolio and the development of a digital library are essential.

As a modern service provider we mediate records from our own inventory as well as from other libraries and electronic sources. Utilising modern information and communication techniques we provide both regionally and supraregionally accessibility to our catalogue.

Alongside our main tasks we are also a cultural institution for the state Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and its capital Schwerin. We regularly organise exhibitions, readings and lectures.
